Our birdroom
Our Birdroom is a fairly modest size,i.e. 16'x8', with a height of 7'6'' at the back, rising to 8'6'' at the front.
The frame of the structure is 3''x2'', clad with weatherboard. The inside of the birdroom was lined with fiberglass insulation, then clad with whitefaced hardboard.
The floor is lined with hardboard and covered with a good quality floor covering.
We built two blocks of cages, four high x four long, with storage space below. Each length of four cages can have the sliders removed, to make an 8' flight cage.
The cages measure 24''x18''x15'' which we consider to be the minimum size required. The cages are made of white melamine, to which the wire fronts are fitted in such a way as to be easily removed in a matter of seconds.
Opposite the breeding cages is a fairly modest flight, measuring 13'x3', and is 7'6'' high.
Thermostatically controlled heaters are used to keep the temperature at a minimum of 45deg.F. in winter.
We have both fluorescent lighting, and filament lighting, so that the filament lighting can be set to fade in or out automatically.
A good quality extractor fan runs 12 hours a day to give plenty of ventilation. The cold water supply comes into the sink unit and we have an electric heater to provide us with hot water. An intercom and telephone extension are fitted, and have been proved to be very useful over the years.
We do plan to add another birdroom at some later date.
